Sustainability at Emerald Park

As a theme park and zoo, we know that protecting our planet is just as important as creating unforgettable adventures. That is why we are committed to making smart, sustainable choices, to keep the natural world thriving. From reducing waste to using more eco-friendly practices, we are on a mission to show that small changes can make a big difference.

We hope to inspire our guests and community to join us in making sustainability part of the fun!

  • 🌎 Ethical sourcing and supporting local

We love to keep it local! By working with nearby suppliers and sourcing ethically, we can reduce our carbon footprint while simultaneously supporting businesses in the community.

    • Wherever possible, we source local materials.
    • Our food (from our restaurants to the animal feed in our zoo) is sourced almost entirely from Irish suppliers.
    • All timber used throughout the zoo comes from an Irish-owned merchant that sources from sustainable forests.
    • We use local print suppliers for all our printing needs.
    • Our retail stock features products from local suppliers.
    • We collaborate with local craft suppliers for construction materials and capital investments.
    • Public transport links directly to the park, making it easier for guests to visit while reducing emissions.
  • 💡 Green energy and reducing carbon footprint

We are on a mission to power our park sustainably. Here’s how we are reducing our energy impact:

    • We use 100% renewable energy to keep the fun going while protecting the planet.
    • Solar panels will be introduced by April to power our 5D cinema and maintenance shed, with more installations planned for the future.
    • EV charging units are being installed in the park – both in our service yard and 20 spaces in our car park.
    • We’ve partnered with Flogas as our dedicated energy and sustainability partner, supplying us with gas, electricity and solar energy.
  • 💧 Water conservation

We are doing our part to conserve water wisely:

    • Our water pipe network includes meters to detect leaks or taps left running, helping to conserve water.
    • We are self-sufficient in water, meaning we don’t place a burden on the Meath water supply.
    • New infrastructure and filtered taps have reduced the need for free-standing water units, cutting down on transport emissions and electricity use.
  • 🧼 Eco-friendly cleaning

We keep our park clean without using toxic chemicals where possible, using a stabilised Aqueous Ozone solution, for a safer, greener impact.

  • ♻️ Recycling and waste reduction

At Emerald Park, we work hard to reduce waste, recycle more, and make it easier for our guests to get involved.

    • Reverse vending machines – available outside our admissions building, toss in your empty bottles and cans for recycling.
    • No more printed park maps – save trees and go digital with our online park map.
    • We now print one receipt per transaction to reduce paper waste.
    • Eco-friendly dining:
      • Recycled napkins
      • Paper and bamboo straws
      • Biodegradable ice cream spoons
      • Compostable takeaway containers and coffee cups
      • 100% recyclable PET bottled refreshments
      • Reusable cutlery, plates, and bowls, for adult meals in our main restaurant
    • Discounts available for guests using Emerald Park reusable coffee cups and Coca-Cola Freestyle refill cups, cutting down on PET packaging waste.
  • 🐾 Education, environment and wildlife conservation

At Emerald Park, our mission is to create adventure and serve our community through nature conservation. We try to inspire guests of all ages to take part in conservation efforts.

    • Every year, we welcome 20,000 school tour students for interactive sustainability tours, helping to educate the next generation on protecting the environment.
    • We operate a Zero to Landfill waste policy, ensuring everything is disposed of responsibly.
    • Our team has planted 500 mature native Irish trees and 50,000 plants in Tír na nÓg, creating vibrant green spaces for both wildlife and visitors to enjoy.
    • To support our animals in the ecosystem, we grow browse for feeding and enrichment, then recycle it into habitat-friendly mulch.
    • We’ve significantly reduced the use of rodenticides, protecting non-target species and keeping wildlife safe.
    • As proud partners of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, we’ve introduced wildflower and pollinator friendly gardens, and bug hotels to help essential species thrive.

We are all about making sustainability fun, and our guests can help too! Whether it’s using a reusable cup, travelling on public transport to visit us, or recycling in the park, every small action can help make a big difference!
