Dougie
It is with deep regret that we are announcing the death of Dougie, our beloved Sulawesi Crested Macaque (Macaca nigra) patriarch. Unfortunately, during the morning rounds, Dougie, the 18 year-old male, was found unmoving. Upon further inspection, our zookeepers were devastated to discover that he had passed away.
Dougie was sent to UCD, where an extensive postmortem examination revealed that he had died from cardiac arrest due to a congenital defect.
Dougie came to Emerald Park in 2018 with his family. Already being the proud father of three offspring – Indah, Masamba and Bumi – Dougie went on to father another four youngsters, including his most recent offspring, born on June 1st of this year. He made an incredible contribution to our ongoing conservation strategy, as part of the EEP (EAZA Ex-situ program).
As the patriarch of our troop, Dougie’s role was to maintain peace. Like all families, macaques have their differences and disagreements, and when things got too heated, Dougie would step in. He intervened only when necessary. Often, while waiting alongside a zookeeper for food, he would pop off to “deal with something”, returning in less than a minute while the rest of the troop apologised to one another in the background.
Dougie was incredibly smart and always eager to engage in training sessions to further our cooperative care program. He was usually the first to come over and see what we had to offer. As the main leader of the troop, Dougie was not one to share. He often sat beside enrichment items, waiting for others to figure them out before claiming the food for himself.
"He always acted and seemed big and scary but he was sweetheart. The troop will not be the same without Dougie in it. I think I speak for all the keepers who have worked with him, past and present, when I say that he will be greatly missed. We all feel privileged to have worked with him, and each of us has fond memories of Dougie's time in the park. His legacy does carry on through his offspring: Indah, Masamba, Bumi, Eka, Basuki, Kirana, and our latest arrival."
Dougie will be sadly missed by all of our staff and guests here in Emerald Park.
